Must-See Three Gardens in Hofu

Mohri Garden

1-15-1, Tatara, Hofu-shi, Yamaguchi Prefecture

Main residence of Duke Mohri family, which was completed in 1916 (the 5th year of Taisho),six years after the start of the construction work, was designated as a national important culturalproperty in 2011.

The residence was considered important in that, according to the description of the Agencyfor Cultural Affairs, the residence was built in 1916 by the Mohri Clan, the former feudal lordof the Choshu Domain, the buildings constituting the residence are arranged in a large-scaleand complex structure with traditional Japanese style while skillfully using modern constructionmethods, for example, in the structure, the design, and the arrangement of each building, and the residence represents the quintessence of Japanese-style houses in moderntimes.

Also, "Mohri Garden," which is a Chisen-kaiyushiki-teien (a stroke-style garden around a bigpond) of the main residence of Duke Mohri family, is designated as a National Place of ScenicBeauty in 1996.

After the construction of the residence at Tatara, Hofu was planned in 1890 (the 23rd yearof Meiji), though most of the construction process of the residence had been stoppedbecause of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95, the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05, etc., it1is presumed that a part of the construction process such as site preparation or procurementof plants and garden rocks had been developed incrementally, therefore, surprisingly, theconstruction period of the garden must have taken approximately a quarter of a century.

Tsuki-no-Katsura Garden

1091-1, Shimo-migita, Hofu-shi, Yamaguchi Prefecture
